My favourite jam for a long time. I've relistened to the first track over and over. It's one I'm working on with a collaborator, so expect to hear it again in a fleshed out form!

about

The drums on Red Spice come from the RC-505mkII - I recorded a long song's worth of different patterns, alternating between lower and higher energy, looped the intense synth bass over that, then improvised on the Keystep 37 controlling my electric piano, put through my ridiculous fuzz pedal. Just using the pitch bend makes the fuzzed-out piano sound like a wailing electric guitar. It's basically another ten minute solo, and the bass on it is ridiculously powerful - I love it :D

The organ interlude is the Keystep 37 playing the Subharmonicon. Just switching the octave made these weird glitches in it. I love the overlapping, bassy tones that the Subharmonicon makes. It basically has six oscillators, and four of them are subharmonics, so it gets very low-end heavy, which is my cup o'tea :)

The third track is an arpeggiator set up on the Keystep, probably playing the Subharmonicon, with a bit of Mother-32. The drums are from the Drumbrute this time. It opens with the filter gradually opening and it building up the energy. At first I wasn't that keen on some of the sounds the Drumbrute has, and because it's all analogue I can't switch the sounds out, just tweak them with the onboard knobs, but now they're really growing on me. I think the white noise issue has got a bit better, which helps. I used some of loopops tricks on the Keystep to change pattern lengths and create new patterns within a set scale on the fly. Super fun stuff. Some of the RC-505's effects come out to play again.
